Twenty three days later, on July 7th, 1846, the first American flag was raised in California, which officially made California part of the United States (as a territory). Two days later, on July 9th, 1846, our Bear Flag in Sonoma was taken down.

Customs House in Monterey, CA: This is the site where the first American Flag was raised in California by the U.S. Navy on June 14th, 1846, officially declaring California as part of the United States. Two days later, on July 9th, 1846, our Bear Flag in Sonoma was taken down.

Colton Hall in Monterey, CA: This is the site where California's first Constitutional Convention took place in September and October of 1849, which preceded California joining the Union in September of 1850, officially becoming the 31st state. Our bear was raised again, and continues to fly!
